Acupuncture is the most researched pain modality in the world.  It has been the focus of over 23,000 studies. Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of medicine that was originally developed by the Emperor’s royal doctors in China and has been refined over the last 2500 years.  It is one part of Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM) and is recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective treatment for acute and chronic pain conditions.

Acupuncture is not “energy medicine.” It does not work by the flow of energy (Qi) through invisible pathways (Meridians).  Current research demonstrates that the true concepts of Acupuncture operate under known physiologic principles that involve the complex organization of the body’s neural (nerves), vascular (blood vessels), endocrine (hormones), viscera (internal organs), and somatic systems, which are sustained by the circulation of nutrients, vital substances, and oxygen.

Does acupuncture work for back pain relief?

A resounding yes!  Prominent physicians like Sir William Osler (1848-1924) were using it in the 1800’s for back pain and sciatica.  Acupuncture in the treatment of back pain works by relaxing muscle spasms and muscle tension, improving blood circulation to the affected area, and increasing the body’s own anti-inflammatory system and opioid (painkillers) response from the mid brain. These mechanisms help the patient experience less pain and, in many cases, completely eliminate their chronic back pain after a course of therapy.  Acupuncture has the ability to totally RESOLVE chronic back pain conditions in a short period of time by establishing neurologic homeostasis.  It rehabilitates the body’s pain regulating system which includes the peripheral nervous system, the spinal cord, and various areas of the brain.

How many sessions of acupuncture do you need for back pain?

Acupuncture is very effective and works fast for chronic back pain. Three initial sessions are needed to see whether a particular condition of back pain will respond..  If there is no change in the chronic back pain symptoms, then the condition cannot be treated with acupuncture which means there is some major structural or mechanical problem that acupuncture cannot overcome.  If a positive response occurs, like the symptoms of back pain lessening, then additional treatments will be given to effectively resolve the condition.  This is a rehabilitative therapy and works on momentum.  In the beginning treatments are given 2-3 times weekly.  As symptoms of pain lessen, the frequency of the treatments will be reduced to once weekly until all the symptoms of pain are gone.  Acupuncture is not a ‘band aid’ approach like pharmaceuticals or pain medications, it is a rehabilitative therapy which restores function of the nervous system and can improve chronic back pain permanently.

How long does acupuncture last for back pain?

Every person’s back pain condition is unique, and many factors are responsible for the results like age, condition, diet, and lifestyle.  When back pain is treated with acupuncture, the results are long lasting.

Acupuncture for back pain reviews

I have been seeing Justin for lower back pain that I have had for over 12 years. My 1st visit I could barely get out of my car and into his office. I had tried back injections and several different chiropractors over the years with mixed results, nothing very lasting. This was a last resort and I wasn’t keen on the ideas of needles and was skeptical. I couldn’t believe I had some immediate relief and am now only going once a month for maintenance. Justin is very caring about his patients and I will continue to send friends to him. Gloria H.
I have arthritis of my spine and knees and spondylosis of the lumbosacral joint in my lower back and coccyx pain. Since being under care at the Montana Center I can shower everyday, which used to be very difficult, and be a better caregiver to my 90 year old mother and my handicapped girl friend. My quality of life has been greatly improved and I’ve made fewer trips to urgent care for toradol injections. I have recently started playing guitar again, one of my great passions in life, which I had to give up over a year ago due to pain. I feel I am well on the road to recovery. Michael G.
